Dam it!

Al at Hoover Dam

No trip to Vegas is complete without the stop at Hoover Dam.  You have to cross it to get in.  There was quite a bit of traffic on the roadway over the dam and that was because Homeland Security was searching all the vehicles.  There was a special lane for RVs.  I guess all of the retired people driving the expensive rigs are now in the threat category.  Our van was searched-no bombs.

The Las Vegas information centre lady told us that parking at the Dam was $7 or if we drove a little further up the road it was free.  We drove.  That information stop was worthwhile.
Dam Facts:
*one of the top ten construction achievements of the 20th Century
*it was completed two years ahead of schedule and under budget
*it is the highest concrete dam in the western hemisphere and one of the largest producers of electricity

In Nevada gas prices were $3.61 a gallon.  We thought that was high compared to the $3.19 we were paying in Arizona.  Then we crossed the Colorado River into California.  Gas was $4.49 a gallon (that's 1.20 a litre).  That's steep!
We followed the Colorado down to Needles, California.  It was hot.  We stopped for a swim.  That water was cold but Sid and Al enjoyed it.

Casino Campground

Back on the road, we were planning on camping at a public park for $30, which included water and electric hook ups.  Then, we saw a billboard advertising Emerald Cove Resort-full hookups, $10.  Giddy up!  That became our new destination.  We pulled up, smiling, to the kiosk attendant.  He asked how he could help us (he was very nice).  We cheerily asked for the $10 site, with full hookups.  Big Bummer.  Turns out this is a membership park and we didn't have the membership. Canadians can't even join.  Only US citizens.  We needed to have hookups because we were completely without water after 3 days of boondocking.  This attendant was great.  He let us in to fill our water tank and he told us about the Blue Water Casino in Parker, Arizona.  Free camping in the parking lot.  Giddy up!  We crossed back over the Colorado into Arizona, where gas prices are cheaper.  When we drove into the parking lot we thought it was a campground.  There were at least 80 rigs parked for the night, some even with awnings and chairs out.

We had dinner and a shower and went in to join this casino's VIP cub.  No free T-shirt but they gave us $10 each in free slot machine play.
