The west coast of Phuket Island has beautiful beaches and we've taken daily advantage of Kata Beach. The water is warm and the sand is soft. Unfortunately, Al has a dandy sunburn on his back from too much snorkeling.

Andaman Sea |
Thai people love their king-there are pictures of him on billboards all over the country. They also love their Buddhist shrines, which are also everywhere. As we drove over hilly, twisty roads to get to the pier our cabby took his hands off his wheel in order to do the Thai Wai (hands together up around the chin) everytime he passed a shrine. Hopefully Buddha is watching the road.
In order to do some good snorkeling we took a speedboat over to Khai island. We spent about an hour loafing around, doing some swimming, some snorkeling and some shade bathing. Then, our speedboat took us to a coral reef for snorkeling. Magnificent.

Warm water and lots of colourful fish |
We spend about 45 minutes swimming around, being swarmed by curious schools of colourful fish. So many fish swam up to us that often we found ourselves eyeball to eyeball with a fish. Their fins brushed up against our skin-their fins are coarse and kind of sharp.
